6 ways to let your intuition guide you to incredible health

Posted by

It’s a confusing world out there in the land of living clean. There is a never ending supply of information force fed to us on what we should and shouldn’t eat, often all conflicting. Signing up to any kind of dogma on how to live your life can be disempowering, especially when we hold all of the wisdom needed to thrive within.

Your intuition is your biggest asset in figuring out what is right and wrong for you. We are all different and we all need different things to flourish. Our 6 tips for tapping into your intuition are designed to connect you back in to your greatest mentor - you!

1. Ditch the diet

If you’re into intuitive eating then restrictions are now off limits. Food is food – its all good if it is truly what your body needs. We know, it’s counter intuitive to everything you’ve ever learnt but oh so empowering. Think of how badly you want something when you know you can't have it. Placing restrictions on yourself is like setting yourself up for failure, it's time to let that go!

2. Deep belly breaths

Place your hands on your belly, close your eyes and take 5 deep belly breaths before beginning a meal. This will get you present, slow you down, and help you to connect with your digestion so that you can tune in to all of the details of your tucker like texture, taste and satiety.

3. Chew your food

Your digestion starts in your mouth! So many of us eat on the run, in front of a screen or at the wheel. We gulp down our food with little attention to the experience or gratitude for our meal. Chewing your food properly not only makes life easier for your stomach as your food is broken down and combined with saliva which kick starts digestion, but allows you to actually tune in to whether you are enjoying your meal. Even if you are drinking a smoothie, let the liquid combine with the saliva in your mouth for improved digestion and satisfaction.

4. Become your own consultant

There’s many inquiry type questions and methods you can use to tap into what is intuitively right for you. It will feel strange at first but with repetition you’ll form a really solid relationship with your inner guidance. Some examples are:

  • Close your eyes, keep a picture of the food in your minds eye (or hold it) and compare if it feels heavy in energy or light. Heavy = not right for you, light = go for it!
  • Ask yourself one of the following questions: Is this food right for me? Is this in my truth? Does my body want this? Will this help me to flourish?

This is really trial and error, so experiment with different methods and questions until you find a couple that feel right for you.

5. Journaling

Keeping a food journal is a well known tip that can help you track how you feel after each meal but have you considered journaling to find out what your body needs before you eat? Getting into a rhythm of writing exactly as your thoughts and ideas come into your mind can be a challenge so keep at it. Some great health related questions to ask yourself can be:

  • What is currently working in regards to my health?
  • What is not working?
  • How do I want to feel?
  • What does my body need?
  • What is my intention from here?

6. Honour your hunger, respect your fullness.

Keep your body biologically fed with enough energy to thrive. Prevent triggering your primal drive to overeat because once you reach the point of excessive hunger, all of your pure intentions of moderate, conscious eating are thrown out the window. Learning to honor the first biological signals of hunger sets the stage for re-building trust with yourself and food.

On the contrary, listen for the body's signals that tell you that you are no longer hungry. Observe the signs that show that you're comfortably full. Pause in the middle of a meal and ask yourself how the food tastes, and what is your current fullness level?
