Cinnamon & Maple Gluten-Free Granola

03 March, 2021

Creating your own granola is a breeze—it's not only incredibly simple but also budget-friendly. Plus, the best part? You have total control over how to toast it to perfection!

Cereal for breakfast has become a staple part of the modern diet, for good reason – it fills you up and is super quick and convenient. Unfortunately SO many of the cereal products on the market are loaded with sugar and bereft of ingredients that truly nourish you. In addition very few are organic, which is a concern because of the way most conventional cereal grains are grown.

If you are interested in making healthy choices you may have found yourself (like we have) standing in the cereal aisle of the supermarket for ages, staring at cereal boxes, one after the other, trying to find one that is low sugar, toasted just how you like it, and only containing natural organic whole foods. If you’re in a health food store or a more “conscious” supermarket you might stumble upon just what you’re looking for but the price tag just isn’t a fit.

Here’s the crazy thing, making your own granola is actually super easy and super cost effective! So let’s save yourself that time and anguish choosing the granola holy grail and just make some yourself... to suit your exact taste and budget.

Below is JUST ONE granola recipe. There are many many different versions that you can try. So we really urge you to try this one out, see how you like it, then play around with your own granola.

  • The version below is gluten-free with buckwheat groats, but you can easily interchange this for oats if you would prefer.
  • If you don’t have all the nuts and seeds on hand simply leave them out or swap them out for ones that you do.
  • Play around with spice combinations. Cinnamon by itself is a classic that you might like to try.
  • Try different dried fruits to lend different tastes, you could try raisins, apricots, cranberries, figs or mango.
  • With the wet ingredients try more or less oil and maple syrup, or swap out the maple syrup for honey.
  • The reason for the water is to make it form into clumps so you can try leaving the water out. This is also the purpose of the buckwheat flour, so you can try leaving that out too.

Before we get too complicated, let’s get into the recipe. We hope you find this as easy and delicious as we do.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

1 cup buckwheat groats
1 cup coconut flakes
½ of cup slivered almonds
½ of cup sunflower seeds
½ of cup pumpkin seeds
½ of cup chia seeds
½ of cup crushed walnuts
½ of cup buckwheat flour (or buckwheat groats blended in a food processor to a powder)
2 tbsp cinnamon powder
2 tbsp ginger powder
½ tbsp turmeric powder

Wet Ingredients

¼ of cup coconut oil
¼ of cup warm water
3 Tbsp maple syrup (or honey)

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 150℃. Mix all the dry ingredients into a bowl.
  2. Mix together the wet ingredients in a cup then pour over dry ingredients and mix thoroughly.
  3. Tip mixture onto a large baking tray and spread evenly across the tray. Place in the oven and bake for 30mins, stirring every 5-10mins to ensure it gets cooked through evenly.
  4. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely. Store in an airtight container until ready for use.
